Refrain... Oh that rocking chair is a creaking And my mama’s a singing I don’t want to sleep I don’t want to sleep I can still hear the creaking of my mama in her rocking chair I can still hear the creaking of my mama in her rocking chair And the sound of her singing from my spot at the head of the stairs She would sing to herself by the light of a kitchen fire She would sing to herself by the light of a kitchen fire I ‘d hope she wouldn’t notice so I could stay up for a while Refrain My sister then would join me where I sat at the head of the stairs My sister then would join me where I sat at the head of the stairs We would sway to the singing and the rhythm of the old rocking chair Remember Papa coming home and chas’n us back to our room Remember Papa coming home and chas’n us back to our room Blowin’ his harp to mamas singing by the light of the silvery moon Refrain I can still hear the creaking of my mama in her rocking chair I can still hear the creaking of my mama in her rocking chair And the sound of her singing when I sat at the head of the stairs Refrain (x3)

When I was a little bitty boy I’d climb up on my papa’s knee He’d make me laugh and shake me by the hips And say these words to me Take sugar in your coffee keep honey on your lips Refrain... Sugar in your coffee keep honey on your lips (Repeat) Well I grew up my daddy got old He’d still say these words to me Take my advice son you’ll never go wrong Take this advice for free Take sugar in your coffee keep honey on your lips Refrain Well I grew into a man and began to see What these words might mean to me I’m lying in the arms of my life Stoking her hair and her hips Taking sugar in my coffee and honey on my lips Refrain Well I know what my papa meant When he said that sweetness is heaven sent I’ll live my life using his philosophy Keep life and lovin’ so sweet for me Taking sugar in my coffee keeping honey on my lips Refrain
5.
I hear the devil calling Baby he’s calling out my name (Repeat) I hear the devil calling I’m keeping one step ahead of the game He’s got my name and number I can hear the devil call (Repeat) He’s got my name and number I’m sitting here waiting for his call The bottom of the bottle is just one sip away The bottom of the bottle is just one lonely nip away My spirits are running low- Yeh baby I can hear the devil calling me
6.
Call the doctor Ring for a nurse Burning up with a fever Check my pulse Refrain... It aint like the measles I don’t think it’s the flu I’m sickening for something I think I’ve got a dose the blues Call an ambulance Feel my head Vision is blurring Find me a hospital bed Refrain Shaking and sweating Legs ache like hell May need a surgeon You never can tell Refrain Ears are buzzing Stomach feels sick Eyes are running Feeling just like shit Refrain
7.
Humming this tune in my head Long long way from my bed As I’m driving along Radio news I can hear Says the road ahead is clear As I’m driving along Refrain... The trees aint growing and the Wheels keep turning Its too hot even to sigh The sun burns a hole in the sky I’m driving along Nothing at the side of the road Scrub and telegraph poles I’m driving along Refrain: Gas stations, and sand The sun burns the back of my hand I’m driving along Chapels, Jesus and dirt The sweat sticks my back to my shirt I’m driving along Refrain: Truck stop coffee and steak Two hours I exit this state I’m driving along There’s still no chance of rain I’m still humming this rolling refrain I’m driving along Refrain
8.
Refrain... Getting drunk oh getting drunk Was never a problem for me It’s the staying sober That’s so hard to be I’ll take a drink when the sun Starts to fall from the sky I never (never) ask myself why Refrain I’ll take a drink when the memory Of the way used to be Starts to haunt and torment me Refrain I’ll take just one more drink And move on now Leave you finally behind I’ll get roaring drunk this last time Before I get myself back in line (That’s what I tell myself anyway) Refrain
9.
Taxi cab cars Know all the bars Where the music is sound I’ll be heaven bound Refrain... We’re doing good business (Repeat) When the sun goes down Refrain Sweet shop Sal Be open in a while Selling sugar and spice She’s so naughty so nice Refrain Jimmy my man Seeking honey round town He’s a popular guy Look at him out my oh my Refrain
10.
Private Eye 02:55
Everybody’s looking- everybody searching But nobody knows his real name You’d better need his service you’d better not be playin’ Cos never treats his craft as a game If you’re ever in trouble Theft or deceit He’ll hear about it from the word on the street Refrain... You might see his shadow from the corner of your eye Or might hear someone from a street stall cry He’s a private eye With his pulled over his wrap around shades With his coat collar turned to the sky Keeping to the doorways out of the light In the shadows he’s silent and sly Making his movements like a big old cat He knows whats happening he knows where its at Refrain He’s a cold cool cat when it comes to the girls Its with him they want to be seen He keeps ‘em coming with a promise ar a maybe You should never be seen to be keen Refrain Down in the alley there’s the howl of a dog And the sound of a shot fills the air Clattering footsteps down by the bins A coke bottle rolls down the stair If you’re ever in trouble Theft or deceit He’ll hear about it from the word on the street If you don’t see his shadow from the corner of your eye You might hear someone from a street stall cry He’s a private eye
11.
Wake Me Up 00:48
Wake me up before you go Let me know when you are on your way Feel your lips on my lips as you say goodbye Wake me up just where I lie You’ll miss me when you’re away We grow stronger day by day Feel my arms around you warmer than the sun I can tell you you’re the only one Let me know when you’re comin’ home I’ll always be here when you return Holding you so tightly when we say hello Knowing you will never let me go.
12.
I met a sweet woman , Brought light to my life Now she’s gone away Far out of sight Refrain... Now I’m standing on the platform Waiting for the last train home I keep looking and searching Trying to find her face Tiring of all this misery And feeling out of place Refrain I ask myself What did I do wrong All I ever wanted Was to fell that I belong Refrain I met a sweet woman, Brought light to my life Now she’s gone away Far out of sight I keep looking and searching Trying to find her face Tiring of all this misery And feeling out of place I ask myself What did I do wrong All I ever wanted Was to fell that I belong Refrain

about

In Mike's words...
‘The musical themes will be familiar to blues fans; soul searching, lost love, distant trains, dusty roads and alcohol! Most of the album was written in India during a trip to visit family and to work at an orphanage in Kashmir. The already tense local political situation deteriorated almost as soon as we arrived, resulting in the imposition of curfews that kept us indoors a lot of the time.

So, ‘Heaven Bound’ came to be- written during those long summer days punctuated by the sounds of rioting, gunfire and birdsong. It has been a labour of love, bringing together the songs I wrote that summer, along with my writing partner, Sameena Zehra, and some earlier favourites written a few years ago. It was engineered and co- produced by Paul Booth, whose musical talents I have come to know and respect from working with him on several other projects.'
